Poodles: The guide – Everything you need to know about Poodles with Polo the Poodle
How old is Polo and for how long did you live together?
Polo is 1 year old now. He’s been living with us, his two pawrents, since he was 12 weeks old.
If you had to describe a poodle in one word, which word would you choose?
Polo is a true adventurer. The moment we say “let’s drive,” he’s already running to the car. He’s never hesitant, whether it’s hopping on a cable car or even a small boat, Polo is always ready for the next adventure.
What’s your favorite part of owning a poodle?
Everything! We live a pretty spontaneous life, so it was important to find a dog who can quickly adapt to changes and be with us everywhere. Polo is small enough to fly in the cabin with us, but also big and strong enough to join us on 4-hour hikes. He is the best companion.
How would you describe your daily life with your dog? (active, chill, calm, noisy etc.)
Mornings always start with lots of kisses from Polo. Our routine is simple, he knows when it’s time to play and when it’s time to go for a walk. Polo is quiet, but as he loves looking out the window, he sometimes barks if he spots one of his dog friends. In the evenings, when the lights go off, he automatically heads to his own bed, which is something we never even taught him!
Did you find it easy to train?
Training Polo has been very easy. Poodles are very smart and quick learners. Polo is also very observant and learns by his observations. For instance, if we change our parking spot, he quickly memorises where the new one is.
What was your biggest challenge in owning a poodle?
Maintaining his fur, especially in winter and rainy days. Also, Polo tends to get cold quickly in winter, so we always ensure he’s dressed appropriately. He loves to play in the snow, so keeping him warm is a priority!
Is there anything we should know before adopting that is specific to this breed (shedding, specific illness etc.)?
Poodle’s are quite picky when it comes to the food. Poodles don’t shred, but grooming is necessary. Some people experience difficulties to leave them alone as they are very attached to their owners. Last winter Polo was upset and opened Christmas presents while we were gone.
To whom would you recommend this breed?
To people who want to include their dog in their daily activities and have an active lifestyle. It’s important for them to have mind simulating activities. Poodles are also a good choice for people with dog allergies, as they are hypoallergenic.
And finally, what is Polo’s favorite hiking spot in Switzerland?
We think it’s Engelberg, especially when there is snow. Polo goes crazy, he loves snow so much.
We would like to thank Polo The Poodle for sharing their experience with us.
