Colmar, with its timeless Alsatian charm and pastel-hued façades, is a charming destination—perfect for a day spent wandering with your dog by your side, just 40 minutes away from Basel. Here’s a guide to experiencing Colmar’s best with your dog.
1. Take a Scenic Boat Ride Through Petite Venise
Start your day with a peaceful boat tour along Colmar’s iconic canals in the charming Petite Venise district. Drift past picture-perfect half-timbered houses and blooming window boxes as your dog relaxes comfortably by your side. The tour lasts 30 minutes and welcomes dogs (at least small dogs—Kitsune didn’t pay any extra!).
2. Go for a walk in the Old Town
Lose yourself in the cobblestone streets of Colmar’s historic center and discover artisanal boutiques. Most places welcome dogs. We suggest stopping at La Pâtisserie des Têtes to enjoy a Kougelhopf, one of Colmar’s local delicacies.
3. Taste the famous Alsatian wine (Gewurztraminer)
Time for a little pause to enjoy some local wine, for example at La Sommelière. Taste the famous Gewurztraminer or Pinot Gris—while your dog lounges comfortably beside you.
4. Refresh at Parc du Champ-de-Mars
Colmar is a city with plenty of green spaces, most of which are dog-friendly. Kitsune’s favorite is Parc du Champ-de-Mars. She met lots of dogs there and really enjoyed the wide open space.
5. Eat a Flammekueche
Conclude your day with a taste of tradition: a perfectly crisp, wood-fired flammekueche (tarte flambée). Le Fer Rouge offers an inviting ambiance and generous portions in a dog-friendly setting. Reservations are recommended to secure your place, especially if you’d like to eat outside.
