5 homemade Summer recipes to keep your dog cool during a heat wave

Summer in Switzerland can get surprisingly hot and while we reach for our cold matcha latte or ice cream, our dogs often struggle to regulate their body temperature. The good news? A few simple ingredients from your fridge are all you need to help them cool down safely and get good vitamins.

Here are 5 easy homemade dog recipes we make for Kitsune during heat waves. No cooking skills required.

Raspberry Frozen Hearts

Ingredients

  • Fresh or frozen raspberries
  • Low-fat plain yoghurt (we like Coconut Gourmand & Végétal from Andros)

How to make it

Crush the raspberries with a fork until you get a rough purée. Pour into a silicone mold, add a layer of low-fat yoghurt and freeze overnight. Serve straight from the freezer.

Why we love it

Raspberries are naturally rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, with anti-inflammatory properties. Combined with plain low-fat yoghurt, this frozen treat helps cool your dog down without any added sugar. The heart shape is optional but it does make it a little more yummy.

Courgette Gaspacho

Ingredients

  • 1 courgette, sliced
  • Dog-friendly broth (vegetable or meat)
  • Delamour Pépites to serve

How to make it

Cook the sliced courgette in water with broth until soft. Blend until smooth, adding a little broth to adjust the consistency. Refrigerate overnight and serve cold, topped with a few Delamour Pépites.

Why we love it

Courgette is 95% water, one of the most hydrating vegetables you can give your dog in summer. Low in calories and easy to digest, it is an ideal base for a refreshing cold meal. Served straight from the fridge, it helps regulate body temperature on hot days.

Broth Jelly

Ingredients

How to make it

Simmer the vegetable peels in water until the water takes on colour and flavour about 20 to 30 minutes. Strain, discard the peels, and dissolve the gelatin in the warm broth according to package instructions. Pour into a small jar or mold, add a few Pépites, and refrigerate overnight until set.

Why we love it

A gentler alternative to frozen treats. Cool enough to refresh, soft enough for sensitive teeth and older dogs. This recipe is also a great zero-waste option: you are using vegetable peels that would otherwise go in the bin.

Good to know: Never use onion, garlic, leek or chive peels in the broth. These are toxic to dogs even in small quantities.

Carrot Bowl

Ingredients

How to make it

Chop the carrot into small pieces and place in a bowl. Add a small amount of pâté on top. Serve cold, straight from the fridge.

Why we love it

Carrots are rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A), they are low in calories and naturally crunchy (good for dental health too). The pâté adds protein and makes it irresistible even for picky eaters.

This is the simplest recipe on the list but Kitsune simply loves it.

Puppuccino

Ingredients

  • Oatly cream
  • Coconut cream
  • Treats to decorate

How to make it

Keep both creams well chilled before starting. Whip the Oatly cream and coconut cream together until fluffy. The fat content is what makes it rise and do not skip the chilling step. Spoon into a small cup and top with a few treats for colour and crunch.

Why we love it

A dairy-free treat your dog can actually enjoy. Oat cream and coconut cream are naturally lactose-free. This is the indulgent one, a little guilty pleasure for warm summer evenings.

Good to know: Coconut cream is high in fat, so keep portions small and treat this as an occasional reward rather than a daily snack.
