One week in Venezia with a dog: a dog-friendly guide

We spent a few slow autumn days exploring this iconic Italian city of Venice with Kitsune, and it was beautiful. Between gondola rides, long walks through canals, and too many tiramisus. Here’s our itinerary to help you plan your own trip.

Day 1: Arrival & Cannaregio

We arrived by train from Montreux and stayed in Cannaregio, a quieter neighbourhood just 20 minutes from San Marco. It’s peaceful, full of charm, and there’s even a small dog park nearby.

In the evening, we wandered through the old Jewish Ghetto and ended the day at Ba’Ghetto, one of our favourite restaurants of the trip.

Day 2: San Marco & Gondola Ride

No trip to Venice is complete without a gondola ride, and yes, dogs are allowed!

We recommend starting your tour outside of San Marco for a calmer (and more romantic) experience.

Later, we stopped at Tre Mercanti for the best tiramisu in town, before grabbing pasta to-go from Dal Moro’s and watching the sunset near the Rialto Bridge.

Day 3: Murano & Burano

The famous islands are easy to reach by Vaporetto (water bus). Dogs are welcome on board, but it can get crowded. In Murano, we visited a glass-blowing workshop, then headed to colourful Burano for seafood at Fritto Misto and even found dog ice cream for Kitsune!

Day 4: Peggy Guggenheim & Caffè Florian

A slower day. While Kitsune rested, we visited the Peggy Guggenheim museum. Then, brunch at Caffè Florian, one of the oldest cafés in Italy. Expensive but worth it, every detail feels like stepping back in time.

Day 5: Last walk & souvenirs

Before heading home, we took one last stroll through Cannaregio and picked up a few souvenirs Kitsune had her final play at the dog park in Cannaregio before we said goodbye to Venice.

A few tips

Visit in autumn or winter to avoid the crowds.
Stay in Cannaregio or Giardini Biennale for more green spaces.
Keep your dog on a lead: there are many bridges and busy areas.
Public transport are dog-friendly: Kitsune travelled comfortably in and off her bag
